Warning Signs of Suicide

  • If a person talks about suicide, take it seriously. It is a myth that if a person talks about suicide he/she won't act on it. This person is trying to communicate to someone that he or she is in pain and needs help.
  • If a person speaks about being hopeless, worthless or helpless, this is a sign of feeling overwhelmed, feeling guilty, or not seeing a future.
  • If a very depressed person becomes suddenly happier -- this may be the "relief " that comes with making a decision to end one's life.
  • If someone is inappropriately or excessively giving things away.
  • If a person seems preoccupied with death or death themes.
  • If a person suddenly begins visiting people or making phone calls to those important to him/her - this may be a way of saying a final good-by.
  • Making or re-doing a will, putting affairs in order.
  • Loss of interest in things once particularly cared for or once enjoyed.
  • Suddenly purchasing a weapon or stockpiling medications.

If someone is exhibiting some combination of the above behaviors, then that person may be contemplating suicide and may need help. Most people, if asked if they are suicidal, will admit it. If someone admits to being suicidal, then that person needs professional help. Professional help is needed to sort the above signs out, as close family members may have a hard time confronting the issue with a loved one, or even seeing that there is a problem. Remember the situation becomes very serious if someone has the means to commit suicide, and has worked out a plan (versus passive wishes to die). If you are a family member, you may need professional help to help the other person and yourself deal with the situation. You may need to call 911, if the person will not voluntarily cooperate in seeking help, and clearly intends on harming him/herself, or has made an attempt.

There is help available -- get help now. (See If You're Suicidal).
